History of the University

It has taken two centuries of evolution to produce a University in Gloucestershire by building on the traditions, diversity and commitment of the historic institutions.

The nineteenth century was a time of social reform and the University's earliest roots can be traced to the local Mechanics Institutes (Cheltenham 1834 and Gloucester 1840). The aims of such institutions were to support intellectual vigour, to develop rational thinking from scientific enquiry, and to encourage free discussion in politics, morals and religion.

By the 1970s, provision was centred on six institutions: the two church colleges of St Paul and St Mary, and the four controlled by the Local Education Authority - Gloucestershire College of Education, Gloucestershire College of Arts and Design, Gloucester City College of Technology, and North Gloucestershire College of Technology.

By 1990 all 6 had merged to create the Gloucestershire College of Arts and Technology (GlosCAT). In 1992 the College was given the right to award its own degrees. In 2001 it became the University of Gloucestershire.

Coat of Arms & Motto

The Coat of Arms design incorporates elements from the history of the county. These elements include a horseshoe, taken from a Tudor Grant to the City of Gloucester; Stags, taken from the grant of the Royal Forest of Dean; the three chevronnels of Clare, from the grant of the historic Earls of Gloucestershire; the cross of Edward the Confessor, for Lords of the Manor of Cheltenham and representation of the rivers Wye and Severn which run through the county.

The coat of Arms demonstrates the intention of the University to embed itself in the life of the county. The Motto, taken from the Vulgate version of the Bible, draws attention to the Christian foundations of the University and is translated: 'In spirit and in truth'.
